The Ambassadors of the Member States to the EU (Coreper I) on Wednesday 8 September approved the creation of an Ad Hoc Working Party on the Social Climate Fund (AHWP SCF).
The aim is to follow up the legislative negotiations on this new proposal made by the European Commission as part of the ‘Fit for 55’ package (see EUROPE 12762/6). This party will be linked to the EU Council’s Environment configuration. It will be chaired by the rotating Slovenian Presidency. It will cease to exist once the fund is adopted.
The Social Climate Fund, under the European Commission’s proposal will receive €72.2 billion (over €144 billion with national co-financing) and will focus on helping the most vulnerable households and fighting energy poverty. However, the fund has been criticised within the European Commission itself, notably by the Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, for its lack of ambition (see EUROPE 12764/24).
