The EU confirmed its position as the world’s largest exporter for another year in 2020 and became the third largest importer of agri-food products, after the United States and China, according to a report published on Wednesday 8 September by the European Commission.
The year 2020 was a successful year for EU agri-food trade, which reached a total value of €306 billion: 184 billion for exports and 122 billion for imports. Both figures represent a slight increase of 1.4% and 0.5%, respectively, compared to 2019.
In terms of product categories, exports of pig meat and wheat have contributed significantly to the increase in EU agri-food exports. It is mainly EU agri-food exports to China, Switzerland and the Middle East and North Africa region that have increased in 2020. EU exports to the US, Turkey, Singapore, and Japan decreased the most in value.
In 2020, the UK was the EU’s largest agri-food trade partner, with a 23% share of total EU agri-food exports and 13% of total imports.
