EU Council agrees definitive EU/UK fishing quotas for 2021

The EU Council has adopted, via a written procedure expiring on Thursday 29 July, a regulation to replace the provisional total allowable catches (TACs) and quotas between the EU and the UK with the final figures for 2021 for fish stocks under shared management. The European Commission adopted the proposal on 30 June (see EUROPE 12752/9).

On 2 June 2021, the Commission reached an agreement-in-principle with the UK on the setting of a large number of TACs for 2021, in accordance with the provisions of the EU/UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement.

These consultations resulted in agreed and guaranteed fishing opportunities for both the EU and the UK for 2021 (and for certain deep-sea stocks for 2022), based on access arrangements that allow each party’s vessels to exploit these fishing opportunities in their respective waters.

In addition, the regulation withdraws the fishing opportunities allocated to the UK in the EU-Mauritania fisheries agreement, and allows for their redistribution among those Member States that have fishing opportunities in the same category, in proportion to the opportunities allocated to each Member State.
