European Commission proposes to replace provisional EU/UK quotas with final figures for 2021

The European Commission adopted, on Wednesday 30 June, a proposal to replace the provisional Total Allowable Catches (TACs) and quotas between the EU and the UK with the final figures for 2021 for fish stocks under shared management.

Consultations between the EU and the UK led to an agreement in early June on fishing opportunities for the EU and the UK for the year 2021 (and for some deep-sea stocks also for 2022).

In adopting its proposal on the implementation of the arrangements between the parties, the Commission explains that it took into account various parameters: - the flexibilities foreseen in relation to the implementation of the landing obligation; - the need to take into account the specificities of mixed fisheries; - the possibilities of transferring allowances both within the EU and with the UK; - TAC deductions resulting from exemptions from the landing obligation; - the need to ensure significant growth in stock biomass; - the precautionary principle. The EU Council of Ministers approved this agreement on TACs and quotas for 2021 on 11 June (see EUROPE 12739/4).
