Renewable energies have weathered effects of Covid-19 pandemic well, says Eurostat

Renewable energy continued to grow despite the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on energy demand in 2020, according to provisional data published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, on Tuesday 29 June.

This growth has led to renewables overtaking fossil fuels for electricity generation.

Fossil-fuel based electricity reached its lowest point in 2020: 1,022,589 GWh, a decrease of 9.8% compared to 2019.

A similar trend was observed for nuclear power generation with 683,183 GWh, according to provisional data for 2020, 6.3% less than in 1990.

The share of electricity generation from renewable sources, on the other hand, increased from 979,866 GWh in 2019 to 1,052,582 GWh in 2020, which is 29,994 GWh more than what was generated from fossil fuels.
