The European Commission and the digital platforms that are signatories to the European Code of Practice on Disinformation launched a joint call on Thursday 29 July inviting more industry players to become signatories to the Code (see EUROPE 12557/26).
These include, of course, online service providers (social media, search engines, messaging applications), players in the advertising sector, and any service provider that can be used to monetise disinformation, as well as any stakeholder (organisations, associations) that contributes to fighting the spread of disinformation.
The call, which echoes the one made by the European Commission at the end of May (see EUROPE 12727/12), was made in the context of the publication of a new series of reports documenting the efforts of Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Microsoft and Google to combat the circulation of false information online (see EUROPE 12734/24).
The report also notes that TikTok’s vaccination campaign with the Irish government has reached over one million views and more than 20,000 ‘likes’ and that the feature to access information on vaccination locations in Google Search and Google Maps is now available in France, Poland, Italy, Ireland and Switzerland. The next round of reports will be published in September, the European Commission says.
