29/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, wrote to the Ministers for Home Affairs of the EU27 on Thursday 29 July, asking them to increase their aid, particularly humanitarian aid, to Lithuania, which is having to cope with a large influx of migrants from Belarus. The Commissioner will be on-site on 1 and 2 August, said spokesman Adalbert Jahnz and a Commission team will follow a week later to assess the situation on the ground. The previous day, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, met with the Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, to ask for his cooperation. Most of the migrants arriving in Lithuania who come from Iraq cannot necessarily be granted asylum. “The issue of returns will be key”, said Adalbert Jahnz. (SP)
