Ten European public broadcasting groups join forces to launch joint news service

02/07/2021 (Agence Europe)Under the leadership of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), ten European public service broadcasting groups launched a joint news service on Thursday1 July called “A European Perspective”. ARD (Germany), RTBF (Belgium), RTVE (Spain), YLE (Finland), France Télévisions, RTÉ (Ireland), RAI (Italy), RTP (Portugal), SWI swissinfo.ch (Switzerland) and the Franco-German channel ARTE are all taking part. They will all now be able to select and publish content from their counterparts “through a bespoke digital news hub that uses AI technology to translate the reports into multiple languages”, said the EBU in a statement. “For example, a visitor to francetvinfo.fr will be able to see a French translation of a news story that has just been published by the Finnish public broadcaster, YLE, without leaving the French site”, the organisation said, noting that the initiative had been subsidised by the European Commission through its Multimedia Actions programme.
