02/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – The Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), Pascal Canfin (Renew Europe, France), wrote to the President of the Parliament on Thursday 1 July to express his committee’s “strong concerns” about the European Football Championship (Euro) final and semi-final being held across the Channel next week. “The UK is currently experiencing a surge in Covid-19 cases, with around 20,000 new cases per day, 10 times more than the average in early May”, Canfin said, adding that the Delta variant of the virus is now dominant in the UK and 40-60% more transmissible than the Alpha variant (see EUROPE 12747/1). The committee is therefore calling on the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council to urge UEFA to reconsider its decision to hold the final matches of the tournament in London.
