02/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – The unemployment rate in the euro zone stood at 7.9% in May 2021, compared with 8.1% in April, according to Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, on Friday 2 July. It remained slightly higher than a year ago, when it stood at 7.5%. Similarly, there is a slight downturn for the EU as a whole, where the unemployment rate stood at 7.3% in May 2021, compared to 7.4% in April (and 6.9% in May 2020). In total, 15.2 million people were unemployed in May 2021, down by just over 380,000 from April. Young people remain the most affected, with an unemployment rate of 17.3% (compared to 18.2% the previous month). Women are more exposed, with an unemployment rate of 7.6% in the EU, compared to 7% for men. (PH)
