Pesticides – European Parliament opposes extending authorisation of flumioxazin and other toxic active substances in EU

10/06/2021 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 10 June, the European Parliament opposed the European Commission’s plan to extend the authorisation in the EU of some 40 toxic active substances, including flumioxazin, a substance classified as a category 1B reproductive toxicant and suspected since 2014 of causing potential disruption of the endocrine system (see EUROPE 12736/6). The objection to the European Commission implementing regulation (EU) 2021/745 of 6 May 2021 amending implementing regulation (EU) 540/2011 was adopted by a comfortable majority (434 votes in favour, 230 against and 27 abstentions). The European Parliament recalls that the authorisation of this substance of high concern has been renewed several times since 2010 and that this implementing regulation would extend the authorisation until 30 June 2022. It is concerned that the European Commission has justified each new extension by delays in risk assessment, beyond the control of the applicants, without further explanation. (AN)
