Pesticides, possible veto of European Parliament on extension of authorisation for flumioxazin

In the name of public health and environmental protection, and to put an end to a practice it disapproves of, the European Parliament could oppose on Thursday 10 June the European Commission’s plan to extend the authorisation in the EU of roughly 40 toxic active substances—including flumioxazin, an active substance of high concern in pesticides.

Parliament is expected to rely on the fact that this substance is classified as a category 1B reproductive toxicant and since 2014 has been suspected of having potential endocrine disrupting effects, to oppose a Commission Implementing Regulation [(EU) 2021/745 of 6 May 2021 amending Implementing Regulation (EU) No 540/2011].

It should also recall that the authorisation has been renewed many times since 2010 and that this implementing regulation would extend the authorisation until 30 June 2022.

The draft resolution to be voted on deplores the fact that the Commission justifies each new extension by delays in risk assessment, beyond the control of the applicants, without further clarification.

The objection vote is scheduled for Wednesday. The result will be known on Thursday morning.
