MEPs want tougher cybersecurity legislation by 2023

10/06/2021 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 10 June, MEPs adopted a resolution (670 votes in favour, 4 against and 12 abstentions) calling for stricter security standards for connected objects, applications and operating systems in order to combat cyber-attacks (see EUROPE 12737/6). The text calls for EU rules to be put in place – including a set of cybersecurity requirements – by 2023. The resolution comes at a time when cyber-attacks have increased in recent months, with targets including public and government services and critical infrastructure. MEPs have emphasised this point, fearing that disinformation campaigns and other cyber-attacks against Member States could have consequences for elections, legislative procedures, law enforcement and justice.
