Forty-seven MEPs are concerned about use of acoustic cannons against migrants in Greece

10/06/2021 (Agence Europe)Forty-seven S&D, Greens/EFA and The Left MEPs asked the European Commission in a question for a written answer on Wednesday 9 June to assure them that no such acoustic cannons used by Greek border police to scare away migrants at the border with Turkey “has been or will be financed by the EU”. “Has the European Commission received information regarding the intended use of such devices and assessed if it would conduce to pushbacks, thus contravening EU law and international obligations, and conform to European fundamental rights, including the right to dignity?”, was the question asked by these elected representatives. Commissioner Ylva Johansson gave assurances the same day that the equipment was not funded by the EU; she hoped that the actions complied with asylum rules, as the Greek minister, Notis Mitarachi, had assured her.
