European Parliament in favour of resolution to improve use of AI for European consumers

MEPs adopted by 571 votes to 17 and 105 abstentions, on Thursday 20 May, a resolution on removing obstacles to the proper functioning of the digital single market and improving the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for European consumers.

The resolution thus calls for more measures to be put in place at European level so that the EU can “become a world leader in digital innovation”, while maintaining a risk and trust-based approach.

We need to protect consumers online and offline. Consumers need to know when they are interacting with AI”, said rapporteur Deirdre Clune (EPP, Ireland).

In addition to “reliable” human-centred legislation, the resolution also calls for AI not to fall victim to over-regulation that could hamper its widespread deployment.

Furthermore, while the text considers it “necessary “ that the development of AI should be the result of collaboration between the Commission, the Member States, civil society and the scientific community, it also calls for an increase in public - under Next Generation EU (see EUROPE 12561/7) and Horizon Europe (see EUROPE 12678/17) - and private funding.
