Portuguese Presidency of EU Council consults Member States on revision of ‘RED II’ Directive

The Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union sent a series of questions to Member States on Thursday 29 April on the upcoming revision of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (2018/2001, ‘RED II’).

Part of the European Commission’s ‘Fit for 55’ legislative package due in June, this review will aim to adapt the RED II Directive to the EU’s new 2030 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target (see EUROPE 12703/1).

In the questions sent to Member States today, the Presidency asks them, among other things, if they would agree to set renewable energy targets for industry, an option supported by many in the public consultation launched by the Commission (see EUROPE 12603/18).

Lisbon also asks EU countries about the level of ambition they consider adequate for renewable targets in the transport, heating and cooling sectors.

In addition, the Presidency would like to hear the views of Member States on the potential strengthening of sustainability criteria for bioenergy.

Finally, the last question concerns the measures envisaged by the national delegations to promote the integration of energy systems.

These issues are expected to be discussed by Member States’ experts in the EU Council’s Energy Working Group on 18 May.
