30/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – The spokesperson for the European External Action Service on Friday 30 April welcomed the agreement reached the day before by Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on a ceasefire and the continuation of negotiations for a political settlement of border issues, after a serious escalation of tensions on the border, which reportedly left at least a dozen people dead. “The agreement needs to be implemented without delay for a lasting and peaceful solution. Both sides will need to undertake all the necessary steps to avoid any conflict in the future”, the spokesperson stressed in a statement. According to the spokesperson, the EU stands ready to provide technical assistance through its regional programmes dealing with border management and water management, if needed, as well as continued political support for stability and prosperity in the region.
