30/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 29 April, the Council of the EU appointed Sven Koopmans as the European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for the Middle East Peace Process (MEPP) from 1 May 2021 to 28 February 2023, replacing Susanna Terstal. According to the EU Council, the Dutchman is a specialist in peace negotiations and a senior diplomat. Between 2017 and 2021, he was a member of the Dutch Parliament, where he was spokesperson for foreign affairs and head of delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He has also worked for the EU and the United Nations, among others. The EUSR’s mandate for the MEPP is to make an active contribution to the final settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on a two-state solution, the EU Council said in its statement. (CG)
