Commission launches public consultation on revision of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Directives

On Tuesday 17 November, the European Commission launched two public consultations to gather input from stakeholders and citizens on future revisions of the EU Directives on renewable energy (2018/2001) and energy efficiency (2012/27).

These revisions, which are scheduled for June 2021, are intended to adapt the two Directives to the European Union’s new objective of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030.

According to the European Commission’s estimates, moving this target from a reduction in emissions of at least 40% to a reduction of at least 55% (proposal still to be approved by the Heads of State or Government of the Member States - see EUROPE 12582/2) will necessarily require reaching 38% to 40% renewable energy in the EU energy mix by 2030 as well as an improvement in energy efficiency of 36–39% for final energy consumption and 39–41% for primary energy consumption (see EUROPE 12562/2).

However, the current 2030 target for renewables is to increase their share in the EU’s energy mix to at least 32%. For its part, Directive 2012/27 aims to improve energy efficiency by at least 32.5%.

Open until mid-February, these two consultations follow the launch on 13 November of four consultations on the revision of other EU climate-related legislation, which is also scheduled for June 2021 (see EUROPE 12602/31).
