20/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE) gave the green light (52 votes in favour, 14 against) to the agreement reached with the Council of the European Union on the removal of terrorist content within the hour, with a view to formal approval next week in plenary session. An Interinstitutional Agreement was reached on 10 December (see EUROPE 12620/11) and the LIBE Committee validated the substance of the negotiations in January (see EUROPE 12634/14). The EU Council formally approved the agreement in March (see EUROPE 12679/36). The future regulation will enter into force one year after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU. It remains contested by the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament as well as by NGOs who claim that it threatens individual freedoms (see EUROPE 12686/37). (SP)
