More Ukrainians applied for asylum in EU in February

20/04/2021 (Agence Europe)The European Asylum Support Office (EASO) reported on Tuesday 20 April an increase in asylum applications from Ukrainian nationals, who accounted for 72% of applications in February. This places them in the top ten nationalities of applicants. Approximately 38,300 applications for international protection were lodged in the EU+ in February 2021. Although they only represent 971 cases, this is “the highest number in four years” for Ukrainians. Moroccans (+14%), Malians and Senegalese (+22% in both cases) were also more likely to apply for asylum. In February, the main countries of origin were Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Nigeria.
