20/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – After a drop in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, global energy-related CO2 emissions should increase by 1.5 gigatons in 2021 (+4.8%), according to the latest estimates of the International Energy Agency (IEA) published on 20 April. According to the IEA, this would be the second largest increase in emissions ever recorded, after the rebound in 2010 following the financial crisis. This is due to a rapid increase in demand for gas, coal and oil. As a result, global coal demand is expected to rebound by 4.5% this year to a level above 2019 and close to its 2014 peak. Gas demand is also expected to exceed its 2019 level. Oil, on the other hand, is expected to remain below its 2019 level due to reduced activity in the aviation sector.
