01/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – A European Parliament/Council of the European Union agreement could be reached within 2 weeks on the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which aims to better identify travellers arriving in the EU from visa-free countries, a source close to the dossier said on Monday 1 March. Legislation proposed in the wake of the 2015 terrorist attacks had been validated, but reopened to bring it into line with new rules on the interoperability of EU information systems. An interinstitutional negotiation meeting on Thursday 25 February allowed progress to be made. These are mainly technical amendments to integrate ETIAS into the overall interoperability architecture (SIS, VIS, ECRIS-TCN, I/O system). The content of the ETIAS device remains unchanged (see EUROPE 12443/10). In force by the end of 2022, the travel authorisation will be valid for 3 years and will cost 7 euros. (SP)
