European Commission consults on future contingency plan to ensure food supply and security in times of crisis

On Monday 1 March, the European Commission launched a public consultation on a future contingency plan to ensure food supply and security throughout the EU in times of crisis.

Various stakeholders in the food supply chain, such as producers, processors, distributors and transporters, as well as consumers, civil society and national authorities, are being invited to give their views during an 8-week period from 1 March to 3 May 2021.

As part of the ‘Farm to Fork’ strategy, the Commission announced its intention to step up its coordination of a common European response to crises affecting food systems in order to ensure food security and safety, reinforce public health and mitigate their socio-economic impact in the EU.

The European Commission is committed to drawing up a ‘Contingency plan to ensure food supply and food security in times of crisis’. The plan will provide for “a food crisis response mechanism coordinated by the Commission and involving Member States”. It will be comprised of various sectors (agriculture, fisheries, food safety, workforce, health and transport) depending on the nature of the crisis.
