14/12/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 14 December, the European Union welcomed the official removal of Sudan from the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list. The finalisation of this decision, which took place on the same day, is “a significant milestone for Sudan’s ongoing political and economic transition”, according to a statement issued by the European External Action Service. According to the EEAS, “it will provide a positive momentum for the country’s economic recovery and move it closer to an eventual debt relief, which in turn should further encourage Sudan to continue the implementation of necessary economic reforms”. The EEAS adds that “the EU remains committed to supporting Sudan’s reform efforts as well as aspirations for debt relief”. In October, the EU and African Union ambassadors had said they were looking forward to the formal US decision (see EUROPE 12590/19). (AN)
