The Foreign Ministers of the EU and the United Nations Association of Southeast Asia (ASEAN) met by videoconference on Tuesday 1 December and reaffirmed their intention to strengthen ties between the two blocs.
In this way, they have evolved their relationship into a strategic partnership. In concrete terms, this means that both sides are committed to meet regularly at leaders' summits and to strengthen their commitment to a future free trade agreement.
Indeed, the two parties have stated in a joint communication: “We are committed to strengthening efforts to create a practical framework for a free trade agreement”.
This new relationship will also strengthen cooperation on global economic recovery, the fight against climate change and the protection of biodiversity. Participants have already announced the creation of a joint working group between the EU and some ASEAN members to achieve sustainable development goals in the vegetable oil sector. Its first meeting will be held in January 2021.
