03/11/2020 (Agence Europe) – Inter-institutional negotiations (“trilogues”) on the revision of the EU system for monitoring, reporting and verifying CO2 emissions from maritime transport (Regulation 2015/757, known as the MRV Regulation) will start on 10 November, it was announced on Tuesday 3 November. This revision aims at partially aligning EU rules with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) system for collecting data on ships’ fuel oil consumption in order to reduce the administrative burden for shipowners and administrations that have to comply with both systems. While the EU Council adopted its position on 25 October 2019 (see EUROPE 12357/1), the European Parliament adopted its position on 16 September (see EUROPE 12561/13). In particular, MEPs are calling for the inclusion of maritime transport in the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), as well as a 40% improvement in the carbon intensity of ships by 2030. (DG)
