03/11/2020 (Agence Europe) – “I call on EU leaders to react immediately to the launch of the Astravets nuclear power plant and to cease the EU market for unsafely produced electricity from the Astravets nuclear power plant”, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda put out on Twitter on Tuesday, 3 November. At the same time, Lithuania’s electricity transmission system operator, Litgrid, announced that it had ceased all electricity trade with Belarus. Contacted by EUROPE, a European Commission spokesperson confirmed that experts from the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) and the Commission are currently examining the implementation of the recommendations made by ENSREG in 2018 regarding the safety of the plant with the aim of publishing a review report in early 2021, before the plant begins commercial operation. Lithuania had sent a letter of protest to Minsk on 27 October (see EUROPE 12591/27). (DG)
