Entry into force of restrictions on 33 toxic substances used in textiles and footwear

Brussels, 30/10/2020 (Agence Europe)On Sunday 1 November, the restriction limiting consumer exposure to 33 chemicals that are carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction (CMRs) will come into force, regardless of whether the products are manufactured in the EU or imported, the European Commission reiterated on Friday 30 October. The implementing regulation amending the REACH Regulation (1907/2006) on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals was adopted in October 2018 (see EUROPE 12114/28). It concerns harmful substances used in clothing, footwear and textile products. This legislation sets maximum concentration limits for individual substances or groups of substances potentially present in these products, including substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), cadmium, chromium, lead and its compounds, and phthalates, among others.
