SECTORAL POLICIES / Climate

In 2019, EU provided €23.2 billion in support of developing countries’ efforts, a figure that is slightly up

In 2019, the consolidated combined financial contributions of the EU and its Member States (including the UK) to help developing countries tackle climate change amounted to €23.2 billion, an increase of 6.9% compared to 2018 (€21.7 billion; see EUROPE 12366/8).

Moreover, excluding the United Kingdom, the cumulative total amounted to €21.9 billion, an increase of 7.4% compared to the total for the EU-27 in 2018.

These figures, made public on 29 October by the EU Council, were confirmed to the EU27’s experts in the EU’s Economic Policy Committee.

They confirm the increase in the contribution from the EU and its Member States to the €100 billion per year collectively pledged by developed countries by 2020 and until 2025 to support mitigation (reduction of greenhouse gas emissions) and adaptation efforts in developing countries.

As in previous years, support for mitigation accounts for the lion’s share, representing almost half of the funds, compared to 20% for adaptation initiatives. The remainder benefits cross-disciplinary projects involving both components.

Of the total amount, €2.5 billion comes from the EU budget and the European Development Fund and €3.2 billion from the European Investment Bank. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
