23/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 22 October, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service called for a credible and responsible government to be formed quickly in Lebanon following the appointment of Saad Hariri as Prime Minister-designate, almost two months after the resignation of Mustapha Adib (see EUROPE 12570/33). In a statement, the spokesperson said “we call on Lebanese decision-makers to work together to meet the legitimate aspirations of the Lebanese people and address the serious challenges facing the country”, and emphasised the utmost importance of implementing economic and political reforms. The spokesperson stated that resumption of effective talks to seek an agreement with the International Monetary Fund was a “top priority”. It is important for Lebanese leaders to work closely with civil society to implement reform measures, added the spokesperson. (CG)
