Successful donor conference for Rohingya, with nearly $600 million pledged

The donor conference co-organised by the US, UK, EU and UNHCR for the Rohingya in Burma and their host communities on Thursday 22 October was a success (see EUROPE 12583/13).

Of the $1 billion expected to be needed this year, nearly $600 million has been pledged.

More than a million Rohingya have been displaced in the region.

On behalf of the EU, the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, announced a new allocation of €20 million from the Emergency Aid Reserve. “Foremost, the EU remains committed to seeking a lasting solution to this crisis”, he said.

The priority sectors will be protection (especially of children), critical health care, nutrition, and food aid.

EU aid of €96 million in 2020. A total of €96 million will be mobilised by the EU in 2020, of which €51.5 million will be humanitarian aid; €39 million to strengthen the resilience and social cohesion of the Rohingya refugees and their communities of reception in the Cox’s Bazaar district in Bangladesh and of internally displaced persons in Rakhine State; and €5.5 million for conflict prevention assistance in the region. 

The United States has pledged an additional $200 million. Their aid in 2020 totals $437 million.
