23/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 22 October, a few days before the general elections in Tanzania, which are scheduled for 28 October, Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, expressed concern about restrictions to political freedom and civil rights. “Reports of incidents and limitations in the run-up to the elections are of concern. The EU encourages all parties to work together diligently to enable inclusive, transparent, peaceful and credible elections”, he said. He emphasised that “democracy thrives from freedom of expression and assembly, and a political environment that values citizen engagement, equal participation, impartiality of state institutions, and upholds human rights”. The High Representative reaffirmed the EU’s support “to the development and prosperity of the people of Tanzania”. (AN)
