Renew Europe group in European Parliament presents its vision of “prosperous and green” farm deal

The Renew Europe group in the European Parliament, which welcomes the intensification of negotiations on the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), set out its vision of a prosperous and green farm deal in a paper on Monday 21 September.

Ulrike Müller (Renew Europe, Germany) explained in a statement that the group to which she belongs supports the shift from a prescriptive, rules-based approach to a more targeted, results-oriented approach, an approach “that meets the economic and social objectives of the CAP, while respecting Europe’s environmental and climate ambition”.

In particular, Renew Europe supports the introduction of new, improved and innovative Eco Schemes (ecological programmes).

These Eco Schemes should be “obligatory, introduced by the Member States and each farmer must have the opportunity to participate in order to kick-start the green economy transition” according to the group’s paper. To this end, Renew Europe estimates that at least 30-40% of the CAP first pillar support (direct aids) should be progressively allocated, over the next CAP period, to enhanced environmental programmes. The German Presidency of the EU Council also proposes a minimum amount, not yet quantified at this stage (see EUROPE 12564/12).
