05/08/2020 (Agence Europe) – Copernicus, the European Earth observation programme, has revealed that there are about 20% more emperor penguin colonies in Antarctica than currently estimated, according to a press release issued by the European Space Agency (ESA) on Wednesday 5 August. Thanks to satellite data from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, scientists working on the British Antarctic Survey were able to track penguin guano, thereby allowing them to monitor the presence of the birds and discover 11 new colonies, three of which had previously been identified but never confirmed.
