Media Freedom Rapid Response consortium records 120 alerts between March and June 2020

05/08/2020 (Agence Europe)A worrying new report (see EUROPE 12535/23) on media freedom was published (https://bit.ly/3icisC8 ) on Thursday 30 July by the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) consortium. During the monitored period, from March to June 2020, a total of 120 alerts were registered on the mappingmediafreedom.org platform, coming from two thirds of the 33 countries covered by the MFRR (the EU, UK, Turkey and candidate countries). “One key trend observed is the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on media freedom”, the organisations said. Another trend concerns the dangers faced by journalists covering demonstrations and rallies. The report states that 45 journalists and media workers were attacked between March and June in these situations, according to 28 alerts from EU Member States and candidate countries. (AC)
