In a written reply to a question by Marek Belka MEP (S&D, Poland) on simplifying tax procedures for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), Taxation Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni gave a glimpse on Wednesday 1 July of what will be in the 'anti-fraud' package of measures that the Commission is due to present on 15 July (see EUROPE 12478/39).
"The severity of the Covid-19 pandemic will have dramatic implications for many businesses across Europe. SMEs are particularly affected by the crisis and will need support, especially in the tax area", he writes.
The action plan that the Commission will present to combat tax fraud and make taxation simple and easy will be followed by several key initiatives, including a framework for a preventive dialogue between tax administrations, with a view to a common solution to the cross-border tax problems encountered by SMEs, he indicated.
The Commission is also exploring the use of digital solutions to reduce compliance costs for both tax administrations and businesses.
At the same time, it aims to make life easier for taxpayers operating in the Single Market by making them more aware of their rights under EU law. The Commission is also expected to recommend actions to facilitate the implementation of taxpayers' rights and simplify their tax obligations, he specified.
