CEMR publishes report on impact of Covid-19 on finances of local and regional authorities in Europe

01/07/2020 (Agence Europe)On Friday 26 June, the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) published a report covering 15 EU member states and two non-EU countries (Iceland and Turkey), which showed a substantial fall in local public sector revenues caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and an increase in expenditure on emergency measures that needed to be taken in response to the health crisis. According to the organisation, this translates into losses that can be counted in billions of euros. In Germany, for example, municipal tax revenues are expected to decrease by €15.6 billion in 2020, while Czech municipalities expect their local revenues to fall by 20% in 2020 compared to 2019.
