Nearly 40 European nuclear industry organisations expressed their desire and commitment to play a leading role in the post-Covid-19 economic recovery on Wednesday 3 June in an open letter to EU leaders.
“The European nuclear industry is ready and able to play its part in supporting clean and green economic recovery at the national and European level”, the signatories of the letter write.
Recalling that 26% of the electricity produced in the EU currently comes from nuclear power, these organisations believe that this energy source, combined with other technological innovations, research and development, is the perfect complement to renewable energies to provide consistently low-carbon electricity.
In order to contribute to the EU’s new industrial strategy, the nuclear sector is calling for coherent policy development and implementation that facilitates investment and enables the development of new low-carbon nuclear power plants (large and small modular reactors), as well as the maintenance of the existing fleet.
It is also calling for the analysis recommended by the Technical Expert Group (TEG – see EUROPE 12442/14) on the question of the place of nuclear energy in the European taxonomy to take place in 2020 so that major investments are not delayed.
