Agri-food and drink products whose names are protected by the European Union as geographical indications represent a sales value of €74.76 billion, according to a study published on Monday 20 April by the European Commission.
The study analyses the economic data relating to products with a geographical indication (GI) or a Traditional Specialities Guaranteed (TSG) designation during the 2011-2017 period (3,153 GIs and 54 TSGs). The estimated value of sales of GI/TSG products was €77.1 billion in 2017 (€74.8 billion excluding TSGs), with wines accounting for 51% of the value (€39 billion), agricultural and food products 35% (€27 billion), spirit drinks 13% (€10 billion) and aromatised wines 0.1% (€43 million).
The total value of GI/STG product sales has increased by 42% since 2010 (37% excluding STG). The total value of sales of GI products was more than €5 billion in five countries: France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain. The total export value of GI/TSG products is estimated at €32.1 billion, or 42% of the total sales value of GI/STG products in 2017. Finally, the value differential reached €40 billion in 2017, an increase of 38% compared to 2010.
The value differential decreased from 2.14 to 2.07 between 2010 and 2017. Link to the study: https://bit.ly/2VNoL5k (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
