20/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – Businesses in the EU are increasingly relying on online sales, according to the latest figures released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the EU, on Monday 20 April. Seventeen percent of EU companies have reported that online sales accounted for at least 1% of their turnover in 2018. With 36% of companies selling online—which is up from 31% the previous year—Ireland recorded the highest share among the Member States, followed by Denmark (34%). By way of contrast, Bulgaria (7%) and Luxembourg (9%) bring up the rear. According to Eurostat, this trend is expected to increase in 2019 and especially over the coming months as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a large majority of European citizens being forced into a health-related lockdown.
