07/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – In a press release issued on Tuesday 7 April, the European NGO network PAN Europe called on European regulators to "stop minimising the effects of mixtures of pesticides in food". "Regulators continue to carry out the safety assessments as if humans were exposed to a single pesticide - which, according to EFSA’s [the European Food Safety Authority] annual report, is not the case", said Angeliki Lysimachou, member of PAN Europe. Published on 2 April, the EFSA report showed that, of 91,015 samples analysed, almost a third contained two or more pesticide residues (see EUROPE 12460/26). For years, scientists have been sounding the alarm that chemical mixtures can amplify the toxic potential of individual chemicals alone, including pesticides, says PAN Europe.
