07/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – More than 40 NGOs (including EPSU, Eurocadres and Transparency International) have signed a joint letter published on Monday 6 April, calling on public authorities and institutions to protect whistleblowers from the pressures they are under during the COVID-19 pandemic. Signatories report numerous cases of wrongdoing and mismanagement in public institutions, including in the delivery of health systems, public procurement, violations of rights to protection of health and safety at work, unfair competitive practices, and large-scale violations of the right to privacy. For signatories, the use of extraordinary powers by governments without proper public scrutiny and transparency creates a tangible risk of abuse and potential misuse.
