07/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – Following Google, it is Facebook's turn to offer to analyse aggregated data from its users to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic (see EUROPE 12461/23). On Monday 6 April, the social network made available three maps on population movements to inform disease forecasting efforts and protection measures. One reveals the likelihood of people in one area coming into contact with people in another (co-location map), the other is based on the breadth of movement within the same region, and the third is based on the social connectivity index, i.e. friendships between regions and countries. The global giant claims to preserve the anonymity of its users by taking steps to mask the identity of individuals and reduce the risk of re-identification. In the United States, it is also offering users the opportunity to voluntarily participate in a Carnegie Mellon University survey. (SPj)
