10/03/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 9 March, the NGO Zero Waste Europe welcomed the decision by the Technical Expert Group on the Taxonomy of Sustainable Finance to exclude energy recovery from incinerated waste from sustainable activities, as the NGO sees this as acknowledgement that waste recovery of this type is incompatible with greenhouse gas reduction and is a barrier to the circular economy. “We must phase out incineration as soon as possible to keep us below 1.5 degrees warming” [average global warming: editor's note], said Jenek Vähk from the NGO. He added: “It's time to recognise that waste-to-energy incineration is a significant barrier to the circular economy because it burns valuable materials that could be recycled, composted or reused”.
