Mobility I package, nine Member States opposed to European Parliament/EU Council provisional agreement call on Commission to take concrete steps

18/02/2020 (Agence Europe)In a letter revealed by Politico on Tuesday 18 February, the transport ministers of the nine Member States opposed to the European Parliament/EU Council provisional agreement on the social and market aspects of the Mobility I package urged the vice-president in charge of the Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, to "take concrete steps" to avoid introducing provisions in the Mobility I package which, according to these countries, are "contradictory to EU’s climate policy" and harm the single market. The particularly targeted provision of the agreement is, once again, the compulsory return of lorries, at least every 8 weeks, to the country of establishment of the undertaking employing the driver (see EUROPE 12376/13, 12357/4). While the interim agreement has yet to be formally adopted, the Commission is currently carrying out impact studies to assess its conformity with the objectives of the Green Deal (see EUROPE 12425/2).
