18/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – In a letter sent on Monday 17 February to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and several Commissioners, Italian members of the Five Star Movement urged Ms von der Leyen not to give in to pressure from the German government, which wants to protect its car industry under the Green Deal. Earlier this month, German Economics Minister Peter Altmaier reportedly sent a letter to the President of the Commission, who until recently was his colleague in the German government, calling for the car industry to be excluded from the revision of CO2 emission limits scheduled for the summer of 2021, as reported in German newspaper Die Zeit last week (see http://bit.ly/39KEZBL ). This is a request that the political movement considers “scandalous and unacceptable”, instead demanding that manufacturers face up to their responsibilities. (PH)
