18/12/2019 (Agence Europe) – As announced, the Member States' ambassadors to the European Union (Coreper) adopted without discussion on Wednesday 18 December a political agreement in principle on the proposal to revise the Motor Insurance Directive in order to strengthen compensation for road accident victims (see EUROPE 12026/6). The compromise text (see EUROPE 12391/11) maintains the general principle that each Member State must set up a body to compensate injured parties habitually resident in its territory for damage caused by a vehicle insured by an insurance undertaking which is the subject of bankruptcy or liquidation proceedings. It also provides a specific mechanism for cross-border situations and sets down a definition of "motor vehicle". Negotiations with the European Parliament, which adopted its position in February 2019 (see EUROPE 12194/21), will start under the Croatian Presidency.
