On Monday 9 December, the Council of the European Union established a civilian CSDP mission to the Central African Republic (EUAM CAR).
The mission will be launched “no later than spring 2020”, the EU Council announced in its statement. To this end, the necessary preparations will be made to enable the mission to reach its initial operational capability.
According to the EU Council, the objective of EUAM CAR is to support the reform of the internal security forces, in order to enable the Central African authorities (CAR) to mitigate the current security problems in the country. European experts will support the Ministry of the Interior and the internal security forces, the police and the gendarmerie, with a view to assisting their deployment throughout the country.
The mission's Crisis Management Concept (CMC) had been approved by the EU Council on 21 November 2019 (see EUROPE 12374/7).
CAR will be the third country to benefit in parallel from the support of military and civilian CSDP missions, after Mali and Somalia. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
