06/11/2019 (Agence Europe) – The United Nations Secretary-General has appointed Christian Saunders to head the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as Acting Officer in Charge, replacing Commissioner General Pierre Krahenbuhl, while UNRWA is under investigation for management issues. Mr Saunders has been Acting Deputy Commissioner General since 1 August. “The Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) has completed part of the ongoing investigation into UNRWA’s management issues. Its conclusions revealed management problems that specifically concern the Commissioner-General”, the UN Agency said in a statement dated 6 November. The EU and its Member States are the main donors to the Agency, which has undertaken reforms to increase its effectiveness. (CG)
